How I’m Keeping the Lights On

February flew by, and suddenly we’re almost to mid-March. I’m gearing up for a trip in early April, and on top of it things have picked up on every front. It feels like all my burners are on pretty high right now, and sometimes that means just taking a breather from a few things to keep the lights on everywhere else.

Touching grass. I actually love this saying, even though it has negative connotations about people being keyboard warriors 😂 It’s a good reminder to go outside, take a deep breath, and recall what our values are. I have been pretty poor at this even though our dog definitely needs to get more activity, so I’ve been prioritizing regular, leisurely walks.

Leaning into spring. I’m not really a spring person the way I’m a fall person, but there’s something to be said about a period of renewal and newness without the urgency and intensity that comes with January. I’m trying to embrace spring’s ever-changing weather and spend some time thinking of whether I’m living in accordance with my values. Sleeping. With the time change and everything else, sleep is a must. What’s difficult is that sleep requires discipline, which sounds so strict. But really it means sticking to an evening routine, putting sleep ahead of more immediately interesting but ultimately depleting activities like scrolling, and knowing that I’m doing this for long-term benefit.

Reading Slow Productivity. I can’t wait to share my thoughts on this one once I finish, but Cal Newport’s overarching philosophies and strategies have generally worked well for me.
